Immanuel
Happy Monday, sisters!
Remember when I said I was going to start reading Praying the Names of Jesus by Ann Spangler? Well, I started reading last week, and I've also decided to not turn this into a challenge, although I will share what I get out of it from time to time. But that shouldn't stop you from getting the book!
So last week's name to study was Immanuel, which means "God with us", with the key scripture being:
Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins (Matthew 1:20-21).
Pretty basic. Of course, I knew that God came to become one of us and to live among us in the form of Jesus Christ, so I'm thinking "this week sure is an easy read, and super easy to apply to my life. I know God is with me."
But by the end of Monday and through yesterday, I had to really remember and meditate on the fact that Jesus is truly with me now. It was super hard to remember God was with me when I was having trouble registering for classes so I could graduate on time, trying to figure out my work schedule, having family issues, and fighting to stay content in my current situation and season. It was so easy to get caught up in my feelings and just lie in bed and cry each night of last week.
To be honest, it was hard to understand the name of Immanuel, because I felt like He wasn't there when I truly needed Him. I couldn't feel Him. To be honest, it was super hard to hear Him last week, except for "trust Me".
While the concept that "God with us" is so easy to understand logically, it wasn't so easy for me to grasp it emotionally and spiritually last week. I really had to be reminded that Jesus is with me as much as He was physically with those 12 disciples 2,000 years ago. He promised me, and you, that He will be with you, until the very end of age (Matthew 28:20).
Immanuel just wasn't a name relevant to God 2,000 years ago while He walked this earth, it's relevant now... today... in 2014. He's with you when you're in the deepest of valleys, when you're on top of the highest mountain, while you're brushing your teeth, while you're driving your car... He's with you.
He's your Immanuel: God with you.
Love you, sis!
