Our Story: How We Met

Seeing as Toby’s birthday was on Wednesday and our six year anniversary is coming up next month, I have been doing a lot of reminiscing of the past years. What a journey it has been! I usually forget that many people that see our relationship have only witnessed the last year of our relationship and think that we have always been the couple that we are today.

Not at all. We have grown SO much and continue to grow daily.

So, I’d like to share our story. It’s quite long, being that we’ve been together for so long, so our story will be broken up into two parts. Today, I will just reflect on how we met, because quite frankly, that’s quite a story right there! We both have two different stories as to how we met. So, without further adieu:

Tobias and I met the Sunday before Memorial Day in 2008 at his church’s cookout. School just let out for the summer, so I spent the weekend at my then best friend’s house and we attended her church that Sunday. This is the story Toby remebers. To be honest, I STILL don’t remember meeting Toby that day at the church; I had met so many people! Plus, I pretty much wasn’t paying attention to any guy at the time because my mind was so focused on how I was going to see my then boyfriend for the summer, seeing as he was spending most of the summer traveling to different colleges (he was a football player at our school, so I guess he was trying to get recruited? I have no clue as to how these things go! Lol).

Fast forward to a week and a half later when I get a friend request on MySpace (Oh my heavenly, I feel SO old!) from Tobias. Thinking that it was my best friend’s cousin, whose name just so happens to also be Tobias, I accepted the friend request and without going to his page typed: “TOBYYYYYY! I THOUGHT WE WERE ALREADY FRIENDS ON HERE! HOW R U??!”. A few minutes later I get “gud…ummm, remind me as to who u r again...”

Huh

? Confused, I click on his page and I immediately think,

OMG, I am an idiot… but who the heck is this…oh, wait he’s a friend of [then best friend].

I quickly shoot him an apologetic message, and from there we just keep in contact via MySpace messaging.

We talked just about every day over messaging about random stuff, basically just trying to get to know each other. At this point, I had no idea that he liked me, and I liked him as a new friend (who I thought was kind of cute, haha). Around this time, my boyfriend pretty much went MIA for the summer: I would hear from him every two weeks, and the convos would be super short…over text messaging. So by mid-June, we were broken up. No biggie. We only dated for three months!

So what was a 16-year-old-almost-high-school-senior girl supposed to do? Yup, move on to the next! I already thought Toby was cute, friendly, and funny so the crush began! We talked… flirted… daily on MySpace, not knowing that we liked each other.

*Sidenote: I don't condone entertaining guys, even as a friend, while you're in a relationship or even just not ready for a relationship. While I thought this was completely innocent and my relationship with my then boyfriend was pretty much over, this could potentially break up a happy couple when feelings and emotions enter. Also, why flirt? There's no need; just let God write your love story!

The day I ACTUALLY remember meeting Toby, lol!

Finally, in July, I met Tobias in person again when he invited me to a group outing with our mutual friends for his birthday. We all went to see the movie

Wanted

and then headed to a nearby restaurant to celebrate. At the restaurant I sat next to Toby and another guy, while I watched them both fight for my attention (can teenage boys be any more obvious?!). Shortly after that, I see Toby lean over to the guy and I hear him whisper something like, “I like her, I got her” to which the other guy sighs and says “fine, I’ll fall back”. I just acted like I didn’t hear a thing. The next day, my then best friend sends me a message saying “Hey! Tobias really likes you. I think you should give him a try. He’s really nice and funny.”  I follow up with something like “Sure, I like him too!”.

So did we begin dating right after that? Heck no! If anyone knows Toby, he likes to take his time, especially before making decisions! So we didn’t become official until August 23, 2008, after a month of dates to the movies and a birthday party. And I wouldn’t have it any other way!

Stay tuned for Part Two of our story! In the meantime, if you have any questions you would like answered about our relationship please feel free to ask! I feel that Toby and I have a unique story that God wants to get the glory out of. We started off without Him being our focus and now we try to make sure we honor Him in our relationship. You can tweet me, dm me, and ask on Instagram (all @tifferbee) or you can shoot me an email at tgregor09@gmail.com.

Love you, sis!
