My Valentine's Day Weekend
Happy Monday, Dear Sisters! I hope everyone has had a great weekend! I know I did. Here's a recap of how Toby and I spent Valentine's Day:
Last week, Georgia has it's second huge snowstorm of 2014 so the state pretty much shut down. The original plan for Toby and I was to celebrate Valentine's Day (a Friday) earlier that day since he had to work that evening, but because of the storm, we decided to just celebrate on Saturday. Because of the storm, I was happily stuck at my friends' apartment all week while my car was back home. So Toby had to pick me up once the ice melted on Friday.
When I went to open the front door for him, I immediately saw a bouquet of a dozen red roses! He must have thought I didn't see them as he quickly hid them behind his back as he walked to the door. As I gave him a hug, he handed me the roses, the most romantic card ever, and a bag of mini Snickers (my favorite candy!). I was so surprised! At this point in time, my friend is shrieking and saying quite a few "awws", and insisting to take a picture of us (I was looking a hot mess, by the way - I roughed the week with only a pair of jeans and two shirts!). After, Toby dropped his smiling and happy girlfriend home and he went to work.
Saturday, Toby called me around 10:30 a.m. to tell me to be ready by 1 p.m. because he was coming over to cook dinner. In the five years that we have been together, Toby has only cooked for me once, so this was a huge deal! I was so excited! I got dressed and prepared Toby's gifts: a bag Twizzlers (his favorite and my least favorite candy), a Valentine's Day Swirl Cheesecake Brownie, a "vintage" love note, and six "Open When..." letters. I got the idea of the love note, here, and the idea of the letters, here.
While Toby was cooking, I set up the family room to make the area more romantic. I laid a pink blanket on the floor in front of the fireplace and place the bouquet of roses on top. A few years back, my mom had given me soap shaped like roses, so I pulled the petals apart and sprinkled them on top of the blanket. Next I added three candles. Thankfully, my parents had left the house, so I was spared them giggling at my attempt to make the family room as romantic as possible!
Finally, it was time to eat! Toby made eggplant parmesan and spinach salad; it was THEbomb.com (yes, I said the bomb. I am a child of the 90's!). He also surprised me and got my favorite Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies and Little Debbie Swiss Rolls. We then sat and ate our food on the blanket as we watched YouTube videos. The date was so us. Toby doesn't have much money, and I am between jobs while I am in school, so I love the fact that we were both creative and thoughtful this year as we celebrated Valentine's Day. I know Toby loves me and he doesn't have to prove that by buying me expensive things. Personally, I think it shows more love to think outside of the box than to just take a few seconds or minutes to purchase an expensive gift (not knocking those who do buy elaborate gifts, by the way! Once Toby and I get into our careers and make money, I will definitely be a happy and willing recipient of lavish and expensive gifts, haha!).
This was definitely my favorite Valentine's Day thus far, and I'm so blessed to have the perfect Valentine!
Love you, sis!
